Tortoise in a Nutshell is an Edinburgh based visual theatre company dedicated to creating theatre that inspires and ignites the imaginations of its audience.

The organisation is a multi-award winning theatre company that has toured work extensively throughout the UK and internationally. In it’s five-year history the company has delivered over 250 performances across 78 cities in 7 different countries throughout the world.

Since forming in 2010, Tortoise in a Nutshell has successfully delivered projects in a wide variety of different contexts, has a strong history of developing highly successful touring productions, and has worked with a number of co-producers in developing new touring work.

In 2010 the company won Ideas Tap’s ‘Edinburgh Ideas Fund’ leading to the creation of the critically acclaimed The Last Miner, which was nominated for the Arches Brick Award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. This success was followed in 2012 with Grit, which met with even stronger audience and critical acclaim and was nominated for both the Arches Brick Award and a Total Theatre award for Emerging Artists and Companies.

In June of 2012 Tortoise in a Nutshell became the first UK Company to perform at the Figura Theaterfestival festival in Baden, Switzerland, as part of the Grunschnabel Award showcase for young companies. And in September of the same year the company began a year’s attachment as company in residence at Cumbernauld Theatre, with whom they developed their next production Feral. The piece debuted at the 2013 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where it won a highly prestigious Scotsman Fringe First Award and was shortlisted for a Total Theatre Award for Physical/Visual Theatre. Since then Feral has toured extensively throughout Scotland, the UK and internationally, and returned to the Fringe as part of the Made in Scotland showcase 2014. Bespoke adaptations of Feral (Feral in Margate, Feral in Poole) have also been produced with leading UK organisation, Fuel Theatre.

The company’s latest work The Lost Things (currently available for touring) was commissioned by Imaginate and premiered at their 2015 international festival of theatre and dance for young audiences. The production has since toured extensively throughout the UK.

The company also has a track record of advising theatres and companies such as Dundee Rep and Sell A Door on puppetry and visual theatre within a production. In addition to productions, the company also delivers educational workshops and participates in outreach programmes to all ages and levels of engagement.
