Tortoise in a Nutshell is an Edinburgh based visual theatre company dedicated to creating theatre that inspires and ignites the imaginations of its audience.

The organisation has won multiple awards touring work extensively throughout the UK and internationally.

Since forming in 2010, Tortoise in a Nutshell has successfully delivered projects in a wide variety of different contexts, has a strong history of developing highly successful touring productions, and has worked with a number of co-producers in developing new touring work.

The Last Miner (2010) created as a result of winning the first Idea Tap ‘Edinburgh Ideas Fund’, nominated for an Arches Brick Award.

Grit (2012) premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, critically acclaimed and nominated for both an Arches Brick Award and Total Theatre award for Emerging Artists and Companies.

Feral (2013) result of a year long company residency with Cumbernauld Theatre. Feral won a prestigious Scotsman Fringe First Award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and was nominated fir a Total Theatre award in Physical/Visual Theatre. Returned to the festival in 2014 as part of the Made in Scotland programme.

Feral in Margate/Poole (2014) bespoke adaptions as part of FUEL theatre’s New Theatre in your Neighbourhood project.

The Lost Things (2015) an Imaginate commission created with Oliver Emanuel. The production toured schools across Scotland and the Edinburgh International Children’s Festival. It won an award for design at the 2017 Kotorski Festival in Montenegro.

Fisk (2016) a co-production with Danish company Teater Katapult. It has received critical acclaim and won an award for Outstanding Performance at the 2017 Kotorski Festival in Montenegro.

Flutter (2017) a co-production with Aberdeen Performing Arts and Freshly Squeezed production. A winter performance for 2-6s which sold out a 42 performance 3 week run in December 2017.

Tortoise in a Nutshell is an artist-led organisation comprised of three core members: Ross MacKay, Arran Howie and Alex Bird. The company works artistically in a collaborative manner with a shared creative vision. In addition Alex and Arran undertake the roles of Co-Company Managers with Ross Mackay as Artistic Director.

The company also has a track record of advising theatres and companies such as Dundee Rep, Sell A Door and The Lyceum on puppetry and visual theatre within a production. In addition to productions, the company also delivers educational workshops, outreach project and professional development to all ages and levels of engagement.
